West Fire Region
Wednesday, June 09, 2010
There was one new fire reported in the West Fire Region by the evening of June 09. Kenora District Fire Number 31 is a 0.1 hectare fire located just north of the community of Perrault Falls burning in grass adjacent to Highway 105.
Red Lake District reports that Red Lake Fire Number 26 has been declared Out. This fire, located about 110 kilometres east of Red Lake started on May 18 and required aggressive air and ground attack and an Incident Management Team to contain. In recent days, infrared scanning of the fire had mapped hot spots not visible to the human eye and these were dug up and put out. The final size is 1,077 hectares.
Red Lake District Fire Number 32, located northeast of Pikangikum had another hotspot revealed by infrared scanning within the interior of the fire area, but work on the fire is progressing well and it has been declared Under Control at 4,417 hectares in size.
Rain continues to be the main theme of the weather forecasts and the forest fire hazard is low across the West Fire Region. Outdoor fires such as campfires are allowed, but must follow safe fire management guidelines. They must be kept small, attended at all times and put dead out before leaving the site.
Daytime burning of brush or grass fires is not permitted. These fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and put out no later than two hours after sunrise. For guidelines set out under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario – visit our website at www.ontario.ca/fireprevention
People living in an organized municipality or First Nations community are advised to check with their local fire officials for information regarding by-laws on burning

East Fire Region
June 9, 2010
Effective Monday, June 7 at 18:00 hrs, the Ministry of Natural Resources has lifted a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) that remained in two zones of northeastern Ontario. The RFZ had been declared for Zones 20 and 21- Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and North Bay areas – in the East Fire Region on June 4 due to extreme fire hazard conditions at that time.
Campfires are now permitted for cooking and warmth in all areas of northeastern Ontario. However, some municipalities may impose their own burning restrictions.
If you light a campfire ensure it is tended with extreme care. Keep your campfires small, never leave them unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished before leaving.
The Ministry of Natural Resources extends appreciation to residents and visitors for compliance during this period of escalated fire activity and reminds everyone that forest fire prevention is everybody’s responsibility.
Six new fires were confirmed on June 8. Two fires were confirmed in the Chapleau district, two in the Hearst district, one in the Sudbury district and one in the Kirkland Lake district. The total area burned was 3.2 hectares and there are no problems anticipated with any of the fires.
Suppression efforts on Wawa 18 continue and good progress is being made on the fire. The fire is listed as being held. Crews are busy actioning hotspots that have been located using infrared scanning.
An Emergency Area Order remains in effect for the area surrounding Wawa 18. Under the order, MNR is prohibiting travel on the following roads: Ripple Lake Road and Bluff Lake Road.
Residents are reminded that if found responsible for a forest fire, they can be charged under the Forest Fires Prevention Act and/or be liable for the costs of suppressing the fire. This cost can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Be FireSmart, visit www.ontario.ca/fireprevention for more information on how to prevent forest fires.
310-FIRE (3473) is the new, toll-free emergency forest fire reporting phone number across northern Ontario. The number will operate north of the French and Mattawa Rivers.
