Angler Receives Fishing Ban & Fine

Angler Receives Fishing Ban and $1,000 Fine For Fishing Related Offences

A New Liskeard man has been fined $1,000 and banned from fishing for a year for fishing related offences.

Rene Beaudoin was fined $100 for fishing without a licence, $150 for making a false statement, $250 for displaying a void (altered) licence and $500 for obstruction. He also received a one-year fishing prohibition.

Court heard that on March 13, 2010, a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer contacted Beaudoin while he was ice fishing on Lake Abitibi. When asked to produce his fishing licence, Beaudoin said he had forgotten the licence at home. When warned of the seriousness of making false statements, Beaudoin insisted he had a licence and was given time to provide a copy of it to the officer.

The officer received an electronic copy of the licence two days later. The month of issue on the licence tag was smudged and unreadable. An investigation revealed that the licence had actually been purchased on March 15 and altered in an attempt to show it had been purchased prior to the original inspection date.

Justice of the Peace Dolores Boyuk heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Cochrane, on May 20, 2010.
