Preparations underway for Clelia II arrival Top of Lake Superior; Nipigon, Red Rock, Dorion & Lake Helen

Travel Dynamics International's CleliaII

Nipigon, Red Rock, Dorion, Red Rock Indian Band – In late spring of 2010, Navitrans approached the Township of Red Rock about becoming a port for the Clelia II, the 100 passenger luxury cruise ship which visited Thunder Bay for the first time last year. With the first boat arriving at the “Top of Lake Superior”, or in Nipigon, Red Rock, Lake Helen and the township of Dorion, volunteers have been busily organizing a warm welcome for the ship and events for the many curious observers who are expected to be in attendance at the historic event. For example, cruise ship committee chair Becky Lawrence comments on recent plantings around town, “”Once again our Red Rock Beautification Committee will ensure a scenic arrival into town.” Many groups are making similar preparations for the events, which are geared for the enjoyment of the public as much as for the passengers.

On June 24th at 12pm the Clelia II is expected to arrive in Nipigon Bay. A welcome ceremony is planned at the Red Rock Marina, and the organizing committee is working to ensure that there is family entertainment for children as well as a wine and cheese with items from local artisans on display at the historic Red Rock Inn.

While in our region to see the cruise ship the committee encourages visitors to explore the Top of Lake Superior region while on your way to Red Rock; stop in at Ouimet Canyon in Dorion, play a round at the North Shore Golf Club, and discover the Paddle-to-the-Sea Park in Nipigon. Musical entertainment will go on into the evening in Red Rock, along with a beer tent.

Lois Nuttall and her tour company, Lake Superior Visits, have worked with residents to assemble information for tour materials, including itineraries that highlight interesting aspects of our local heritage and stunning natural environment. The tours include Ouimet Canyon in Dorion, the Nipigon Red Rock Hiking Trail, and the Mighty Nipigon River tour.

In order to accept foreign passengers from security certified vessels, the Red Rock Marina required being security certified. The Township of Red Rock has meanwhile proceeded with arrangements to secure port certification and install safety standards to accept the cruise ship passengers. On May 14th the process was completed. Under the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) and primarily, the Marine Transportation Security Regulations (MTSR) the Red Rock Marina was officially a certified marina. Legal documents and a certificate have arrived and the original certificate posted at the Marina Kiosk.
