Mother’s Day at Nursery School
Preschoolers celebrate special women
by Karina Hunter
Thursday May 6th and Friday May 7th, week-long preparations by students and staff of Manitouwadge Nursery School (MNS) culminated in two Mother’s Day Tea Parties. Festivities were held over two days to ensure that all children who attend the school would have an opportunity to celebrate.
There were at least double the regular number of students in attendance on Thursday, plus their guests, presenting an opportunity for children to meet friends who might normally attend on alternate days and show off the sharing skills they practice regularly at the school. Mothers, Grandmothers and caregivers had some time to play with their tots before MNS Supervisor Tanya Lalonde announced that it was circle time.
The little ones quickly found their seats at ‘circle’, a brightly coloured carpet where they share stories, songs and educational lessons lead by their teachers. Each asked their guests if they preferred tea or coffee which, with their teachers’ help, they then served before taking their own place at the table for a healthy snack. Earlier in the week the children had helped to make Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies and they were eager to share the treats with the special women who had come to their tea party.
The cookies were a hit and before long the party was wrapping up. Children presented their guests with one last gift before leaving for home; Thursday it was a small plant in pots the kids had decorated themselves with stickers, Friday a laminated placemat which included a poem printed by their teachers, each complete with the child’s signature and his or her handprints.
