Marathon LAC Extended
MARATHON LABOUR ADJUSTMENT CENTRE GETS EXTENSION
Gravelle announces more help for laid-off workers
The Ontario government is providing more support to help laid-off workers in Northwestern Ontario. An additional investment of $61,841 by the Ontario government will keep the Marathon Labour Adjustment Centre (LAC) open until October 31, 2010.
This brings the province’s total investment in the Marathon LAC to $261,301 and marks the first extension for the centre, for which the original contract was signed April 1, 2009. Prior to this new investment, the Marathon LAC was scheduled to close March 31, 2010. The typical time frame for an LAC contract is one year.
Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle applauded the extension. “I’m delighted to see this additional support for laid-off workers in the Marathon area. Our government recognizes how important it is to help workers gain the skills and knowledge they need to find jobs in the new economy,” Gravelle remarked.
“I am very pleased that the Ontario government and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities recognize the need for continued support of the Marathon Labour Action Centre that provides support for our laid off mill workers and all other potential affected workers in our community,” said Marathon Mayor Rick Dumas.
The Marathon LAC is one of 20 job action centres in Northern Ontario. There are just over 100 job action centres across the province. A range of Employment Ontario services are available through LACs, including job-finding clubs, resume writing workshops, interview preparation courses, career counselling services and a job bank. These services are also available at Employment Ontario offices throughout Ontario.
