PIC MOBERT FIRST NATION –May 18, 2010 – Pic Mobert Health Centre, originally expected to open nearly a month ago, is drawing near readiness. Final touches are being completed as staff look forward to finally, after almost a decade of efforts, getting to work in the new edifice where they will be better equipped to support residence in living healthier.
An official from Health Canada visited the centre today, which is missing only superficial final adjustments such as the phone system on which staff will have to receive training, the automated interior doors, some furniture and landscaping of the property on which the centre has been erected.
Approximately 7 regular staff plus visiting medical professionals will work from the centre which, in addition to housing the township’s social services department, also has space dedicated to diabetes support, foot care, and the Food Bank.
Residents are excited in regards to the rumour that Manitouwadge dentist, Dr. Muresanu, has approached the band regarding offering her services from the centre; plans also include the possibility of a Family Doctor from nearby Marathon working out of the centre on a regular schedule potentially as often as every week.
Band Treasurer, and Acting Band Manager, Elaine Stewart was positive in regards to what the new health centre would offer Pic Mobert First Nations residents “Efforts to acquire a new building for our health services began nearly 10 years ago and we have long since out grown the old building” said
Stewart, looking across the street at the ‘portable’ unit which has housed health services she added “we were very happy when news came of Health Canada’s funding for a new health centre. Construction begun on the site in September 2009 and are due to be completed any day now.
