Two hunters have been fined a total of $5,500 and one received two years of probation for illegal moose hunting.

Terry Huckell of Dryden pleaded guilty to illegally hunting a cow and a bull moose, making a false statement to a conservation officer and shooting a moose from a power boat. He received $5,000 in fines and a two-year probation order, during which he is banned from hunting in Ontario. John Cawker of Ely, Minnesota, was fined $500 for shooting a moose from a power boat.

Court heard that on October 12, 2009, Huckell and Cawker shot a bull and cow moose from a power boat on Dinorwic Lake near Dryden. The lake is on the boundary of Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 8 and WMU 9A. The hunting party had moose tags for WMU 8. The moose were shot in WMU 9A, so the hunting group moved the animals to WMU 8 to be tagged and field dressed. The next day, the hunting group gave false information to conservation officers about the kill sites. Further investigation revealed the true location. The moose were seized and forfeited to the Crown. Rifles, boats, motors and other equipment were also seized and will be returned after the fines are paid.

Justice of the Peace Daisy Hoppe heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Dryden, on May 18, 2010.
