MMHA Season Ends

by April Robinson and Karina Hunter

Saturday May 1st, Manitouwadge Minor Hockey Association (MMHA) hosted their annual year-end banquet at the Recreation Centre auditorium. Parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and most especially hockey players of all shapes and sizes gathered to reminisce of another challenging year filled with success.

The auditorium was wonderfully decorated with the Copper Kings official colours adding to the air of excitement felt as attendees admired a head table covered with awards which would soon be distributed. But first – the feast.

Every family participated, contributing a dish for the ‘pot luck’ style meal meaning there was something wonderful to suit any taste. No one went home hungry, not even the hollow legged hockey players.

Following a sumptuous spread of desserts, presentations began. The youngest hockey players, our IP1 team, were the first to receive their awards. This was followed by Novice Teams, the Atoms and the Pee wees. Senior Goalie of the year was then presented.

Several people in the audience noticed that one award had yet to be presented, that of Junior Goalie of the year. The reason for this was soon made clear.

MMHA President Charles Newton gave a very moving speech recalling the years that Stephen Philippe*See below had spent as a Copper King, his love and dedication for the game and the way he had inspired those around him.  A video was shared honouring Steven’s life before the presentation of the Steven Philippe 2010 Memorial Junior Goalie of the Year.  The award was fittingly renamed, ensuring that future hockey players for years to come would know of Stephen and what an incredible young man he was.

Daniel Philippe Sr., Stephen’s father, took the podium sharing with those in attendance, a brief summary of Stephen’s years as a Copper King, the impact that friend and hockey mentor Kurtis Jung had on Stephen when he first started as a goalie; and the memories he (Mr Philippe) and the rest of their family had of Stephen’s hockey days.  Other members of the Philippe Family, Stephen’s Mom Jocelyn, sister Melissa, and brother Danny joined Daniel as he was presented with a framed replica of Stephen’s Copper Kings jersey which will be displayed in the Recreation Centre Trophy Case in honour of the young star’s hockey career which was so tragically cut short.

The Philippe Family then presented the 2010 Steven Philippe Memorial Junior Goalie of the Year Award to Mackenzie Robinson.

The Novice team was called to the front once again to be presented with trophies and the banner for the Eastern Zones Championships, the banner has since been hung in the Rec Centre Arena.

With final remarks, Charles Newton closed the banquet, and brought the 2009-2010 hockey season to a close. Congratulations to the atheletes of the Manitouwadge Minor Hockey Association for their many successes throughout the 2009-10 season, search MMHA on OntarioNewsNorth.com to see photos/video from home and away games.

*Steven Philippe’s life and hockey carreer was tragically cut short when he and two friends were killed by a drunk driver June 21, 2009. Caitlin Jelley, Jazmine Houle and Steven Phillippe were walking on Municipal Road 80, when a drunk driver hit them from behind, killing all three of these beautiful teenagers.
