Bear Dangers in Maniouwadge?

Reckless dumping of garbage endangers Manitouwadge residents

I saw this bear on Hwy 614 last week. As is obvious bears are well equipped to fend for themselves in the wild, please leave them to it, we don't need them in our town! Editor, ONN

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Friday May 14th, 2010 The  photo below was taken of the Public Works employees near the bear dumpster located across from the soccer field to highlight the reckless dumping of waste, debris and hazardous materials in the bear dumpster including:

  •  orange and blue tarps;
  • sheets of Styrofoam;
  • blue with red adult Atomic downhill skis/bindings;
  • navy/blue adult cross country ski boots;
  • men’s dark brown work boot’s;
  • hazardous materials such as paint cans;
  • auto parts and pieces of plywood;

which are not permitted to be disposed of in the bear dumpsters.

Innapropriate debris/garbage left at Bear Wise dumpster.

As shown in the photo, the Public Works employees had to remove such materials in order to empty the bear dumpster, which took more time. These materials may still need to be picked up by Public Works employees who have other work responsibilities.

If you see anyone dumping such debris/hazardous waste into the bear dumpsters please call the Municipal Law Enforcement Office at 826-3227 Ext 244 and/or leave message.

Behind Matachewan street.

As part of this years Spring Clean-Up week when efforts were underway to locate owners and/or information for an inoperative vehicles stored/abandoned on township property at the rear of Matachewan Road, the Municipal Law Enforcement Officer discovered several bags of garbage hauled into the bush along with several lobster shells discarded and strewn across an area.

PLEASE “DON’T FEED THE BEARS” for the safety of people wanting to enjoy our beautiful outdoors, to keep our environment clean and for the sake of the bears, as some people say “a fed bear is a dead bear”!

Any waste dumped in any areas of town, whether intentionally or not, is the best way to attract and feed bears and bear traps continue to be present in such areas.

**Reminder- After May 15th 2010, the Corporation for the Township of Manitouwadge  requires householder(s) to comply with Garbage By-Law 91-25.

An entirety of the garbage by-law can be viewed at www.manitouwadge.ca or a copy of this by-law can be picked up at the Municipal Office during working hours.

Bear problems…call the MNR Bear Hotline 1-866-514 2327 (BEAR) or Garbage By-Law related questions call Cherie Gray/MLEO at 826-3227 Ext 244 or Omer Collin, Public Works Superintendent Ext 230.

Ongoing assistance and cooperation from the people in Manitouwadge is sincerely appreciated as it supports our ongoing efforts to keep our town a safe and clean place to live.

On this day, my 15 yr old son was picking up his 4 yr old sister from Nursery School, he viewed the Township employees, MNR and others who were required to deal with this mess.  I am thankful that these peope were so prompt with dealing with this but frustrated with the idea that they could’ve been busy elsewhere, or perhaps if it had not been brought to their attention when it was, would my kids have been walking home to meet up with a bear? Let’s leave the bears in the bush where they belong! Please dispose of your garbage according to the regulations and by-laws set out by our township, do not feed ANY animals (including foxes, birds, etc) they always attract other, larger friends.
