THE SCORE
April 8th we held a Crib Tournament at which 24 players participated; Connie H. and Francis L. were the successful team with ‘0’ pts scored against them. This provided entertainment for members & a few dollars for the club’s operations.
FINANCIAL NEWS
I will also report that we have received and spent grant monies for replacement of activities moneys and kitchen equipment in the amount of $10,0000. This grant was made available through the “New Horizons for Seniors Program”. Our facility is now furnished with new, lighter and safer
chairs and tables and new kitchen equipment which had reached the end of its usefulness. We are indebted to the Human Resources & Social Development Department of the Federal Government for this grant.
We have also applied for a grant to assist in renovations for the seniors club and expect to receive a positive response in the near future.
LIVING IT UP
The Annual Seniors Games, age 55 years & older for our Superior District 3B are being held in Manitouwadge and Marathon from May 20th – June 4th, 2010. Being an “Actifest” year, which happens every other year, winners in our district are able to compete with thee other districts of Ontario in Oshawa, Ontario during thee 3rd week of August. All of our senior competitors are anxious and looking forward to representing their district. Normally Superior District 3B sends approximately 25 of their group to the All-Ontario Summer Competition. The Superior 3B District encompasses the communities from Schreiber, to Wawa. Other communities such as Dubreuilville, Hornepayne & Chapleau have been encouraged to participate as well. The bus which can accommodate approximately 40 passengers will take other seniors who wish to attend & enjoy a five day inexpensive holiday. Details may bee obtained from your local club.
Our local Summer Games has a windup banquet its final day, June 3rd in Manitouwadge where the winners are acknowledged and a sumptuous feast is enjoyed. The games are an opportunity for thee seniors to gather for friendly competition and renew acquaintances as well as make new ones.
Finally, April 20th, the Harmony Club hosted a Pot Luck Dinner at which we were treated to an
incredible performance by One Blood, a group from Luanberg, Nova Scotia who were traveling in our area. The five performers, a father and his four sons, sang a wide variety of accapella songs many of which had us reminiscing of our younger years. This was a great family event which White River and area residents of all ages attended.
Until next time, keep smiling – it uses less muscles!
