Spikes program begins in Manitouwadge

by Karina Hunter

Pictured above are participants and coaches of Spikes Volleyball, a program from the Ontario Volleyball Association, has begun in Manitouwadge.  Two programs are being held once a week each, Grades 4 – 6 and 7 and 8, at the Manitouwadge High School gymnasium.

Ontario Volleyball has modified the game of volleyball to make it more accessible eand fun for youth.  Playing 3 per side, everyone gets to touch the ball which is softer.  The net is also lower so that everyone can experience success.  The drills and games are designed so that everyone has plenty of fun while learning new volleyball skills.

Emphasizing fair play, respect and team work the Spikes program encourages leadership, conflict resolution, sportsmanship and self confidence while promoting a love of sport and activity that kids can carry through to adulthood.

Coaches have access to resource guides, such as separate drill and lesson plans for lower grades as well as a resource manual for the older kids.

Registration fees were $50 per player for 10 weeks of learning and fun. For more information regarding Manitouwadge’s Spikes program, why it was initiated and who are the adults involved, come back to www.OntarioNewsNorth.com new sports column (find the sports column on the lower portion of home page) later this week.
