MHSAA @ Frosty Days 2010
Trepidatious Transportation
by Karina Hunter
This year’s Frosty Days celebrations would not have been complete without the Manitouwadge High School Athletic Association’s Cardboard Box Races at the Kiwissa Ski Centre. The always entertaining occasionally life-threatening races succeeded this year in raising $300 for the MHSAA. The course for the racees; two lanes approximately 100m in length, was set-up on the lower portion of the Main Run where it intersected by the Angel and Girls’ Runs. Conditions were nearly ideal, as 30 participants (up from last year’s 24) climbed the hill anticipating their descent on or in the cardboard box contraptions each pair had created.
Competing in two classes, Grade 8 and under or Grade 9 and over, they were first judged on the creativity of their box racers. Winners for most creative were: Grade 8 and under – Sydney Courtemanche and Tristin Olivera; Grade 9 and over – Kirk Tourout and Paul Richard. Racing in the same categories, winners for the junior races, with an impressive time of 10.85 seconds, were cousins Cassie and Kristin Osiecki; in the senior (Grade 9+) races the winning teammates with a time of 10.30 seconds, were MHS teachers Wayne Pittman and Gord Martin.
The MHSAA thanked Manroc Developments Inc., Daillaire’s Welding, Bikes
‘N’ Stuff, and the Township of Manitouwadge for their generous support and Kathy Keough and Diane Aguiar for their time and efforts. Congratulations to all the racers, their ingenuity, courage and sportsmanship made this a very special event!
