Triple P winds up
by Karina Hunter
Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) Public Health Nurse (PHN) Jackie Jung and Kristie Nicholas, Mental Health and Addictions Counselor with North of Superior Programs (NOSP) wrapped up their three session Triple P Parenting Program seminar in Manitouwadge, Wednesday, February 3rd with “Raising Resilient Children”.
The Program Team, which also includes TBDHU PHN, Shirley Saasto-Stopyra, and Best Start Hub Program Coordinator Kelly Sagle, participated in very intense training to become Level 2 and 3 practitioners in the international, Triple P – Positive Parenting Program focused on improving the confidence, knowledge and skills of parents to help them raise healthy, confident children who have the skills to succeed in life and build positive relationships. At this last seminar, Jung and Nicholas each addressed participants, parents, caregivers and professionals working with children offering advice in regards to raising children who are emotionally resilient, capable of coping with their feelings for long-term happiness, wellbeing and success in life. At each seminar, participants were provided with Tip Sheets to help in the implementation of Triple P strategies; those who attended all three seminars were also presented with certificates of completion from Jung and Nicholas.
The Triple P Team will continue offering answers to parenting questions at upcoming ‘Tip Sheet’ sessions yet to be scheduled and reminded parents that additional, personalized training, including one-on-one parenting plan development, with plan delivery support and follow-up can be accessed through each of the practitioners at TBDHU, NOSP and the Best Start Hub.
Participants were reminded throughout that Triple P is a flexible program, and that they should use the skills taught, doing as little or as much as they want, as best suits their children and family’s individual needs. Anyone interested in more information about Triple P or building a personalized parenting plan should contact either Kristie Nicholas at 826-4517, Shirley Saasto-Stopyra or Jackie Jung at 826-4061 , or Kelly Sagle at 826-2883.
