February 25th, Senior Girls’ Volleyball teams from Sioux Lookout’s Queen Elizabeth District High School and Thunder Bay’s École Secondaire Catholique de la Verendrye traveled East to compete against the Manitouwadge High School Wolverines for Northwestern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (NWOSSA) Senior Girls’ Volleyball Championships. The two day competition determined which schools would represent Northern Ontario at the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Association (OFSSAA) Girls ‘A’ Volleyball Provincial Championships at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Kenora, Ontario from March 8th through 11th, 2010.

The teams provided Manitouwadge fans filling the bleachers with “nail biting”, “on the edge of your seat” performances throughout the 2-day championship reminding everyone that, as Manitouwadge NWOSSAA organizer, teacher G.G. Jones, put it during her closing address at the awards ceremony “Athletes of the North are to be taken seriously”.

The games were action packed throughout with all teams taking their play to new levels.

The games were action packed throughout with all teams taking their play to new levels.

Day 1 ESC de la Verendrye seemed prepared to take the gold as they won games against both MHS’s Wolverines 25-15, 25-12, and 25-15 (3-0) and QEDHS’s Warriors 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, and 25-21 (3-1) securing the Vipers’ place in the finals. The evening match-up was fierce, MHS vs. QEDHS 23-25, 10-25; hometown fans roared in the stands as the Wolverines next won 26-24 forcing the Warriors into a fourth game, but it would not be enough, though MHS often had QEDHS scrambling to keep up the final score was 23-25 ( 1-3).

Day 2 the battle for gold continued; a lone Warriors fan, Mom to two of the team’s stars, was joined by the Wolverines Senior Girls in cheering QEDHS on when in game 3 down 2-0 ( 21-25, 22-25) the Warriors came back. Closing ranks with accurate serves and very   deliberate sets they downed the Thunder Bay “A” Champion Vipers 25-13, 25-21 and 15-8 to capture the NWOSSAA title. Warriors Coach Moira Bower said the girls are looking forward to competing against their nemesis, OFSAA Hosts St. Thomas Aquinas, “We’ll be coming to play just as we did here” said Bower “Our girls wanted it, even when we were down they didn’t quit – they pushed through”.

During the game, the following players were recognized for their efforts:
