Red Rock Marina & Downtown surveillance
Security enhancements continue at Marina
by Karina Hunter
Technicians from Thunder Bay’s Safety Net Security worked in Red Rock this week to install a total of four surveillance cameras divided between the marina and the downtown area; this follows the communities recent implementation of a curfew for children 16 years and younger, hoped to both deter vandalism and to be proactive in maintaining this quaint Northshore community’s reputation as a quiet, peaceful and safe community.
Students on their lunch break from Nip-Rock High School watched with interest as Safety Net Security Technicians Jamie Kelsey and Geoff Butler installed a camera just below the roof overhang of a building next to the Community Memorial Park. Kelsey explained that Hydro One was to follow at a later date and complete the high voltage electrical components.
Marina Project Manager, Gerald Serasin, said that maintaining residents’ privacy was a priority when choosing locations and that proper signage is to be put in place. Serasin explained that the cameras are equipped with technology permitting them to ‘grey out’ any private building or location(s) in the camera’s sweep automatically. This real time grey out occurs during the video capture meaning it is never recorded eliminating the need to delete footage post-recording. The task of viewing surveillance will be allocated by the township to a member of their staff though ongoing technical support is available from Safety Net Security.
The surveillance project was included in plans for the new Marina Centre, obtaining funding from a number of sources including FedNor and Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) this increased security facilitates progression of the centre.
