The Superior-Greenstone District School Board in partnership with Superior North Catholic District School Board, North of Superior Programs (NOSP) and Integrated Services for Northern Children (ISNC) are inviting school administrators, teachers, parents, and other community professionals working with children to participate in a one-day workshop Friday, November 13th with renowned pediatric psychologist and author, Dr. Ross Greene, PhD.  The workshop, being held in RED ROCK at the Nipigon Red-Rock District High will be broadcast live via satellite to all high schools in the Superior-Greenstone District School Board is an incredible opportunity for Northshore parents to participate in the type of instruction usually limited to educational professionals.

Ross W. Greene, Ph.D specializes in the assessment and treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. He is the author of The Explosive Child, co-author of Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach, and author of the recently-released Lost at School. He is also Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Greene’s research focuses on the classification, longitudinal study and outcomes in socially impaired children with ADHD; and student teacher compatibility. Having authored numerous articles, chapters, and scientific papers on school- and home-based interventions for children with disruptive behavior disorders Greene’s workshops are in high demand; you may recognize him from appearances on the Oprah Show, Dateline NBC, The Morning Show, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio.

Among the organizations who have funded his research are the Stanley Medical Research Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the U.S. Department of Education.

Topics to be addressed during the seminar include; Kids Do Well if They CAN, How Your Explanation and interpretation Guides Your Intervention, Overview of Conventional Reward and Punishment Approaches, Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems Set the Stage for Challenging Behaviour, Use of the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved problems, and will also include in-depth instruction in Greene’s model of psychosocial treatment called Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) that has proven effective in treating explosive kids. Based on research in the neurosciences over the past 30 years, the CPS model is based on the understanding that challenging behavior in children is a form of development delay and the by product of lagging cognitive skills. There is also time allotted during the day for those attending to present their questions to Dr. Greene.

CPS will help attendees teach these lagging cognitive skills helping kids solve the problems precipitating their challenging behavior while reducing the frequency and intensity of challenging behaviours. The model has been found to be highly effective in a diverse array of settings, including families, general and special education schools and others. Participants will leave with an understanding of the CPS model, as well as assessment and intervention tools that are used.
