Manitouwadge EDC improving ‘the corner’
“Gateway” Project continues to progress
by Karina Hunter
Manitouwadge’s “Gateway” project 54km from the community at the junction of Hwy 17 & Hwy 614 referred to as ‘the corner’ by locals, will be much more visible to drivers traveling at night, thanks to the installation of lights which illuminate the site’s Play in the Extreme monument consisting of the slogan across the top a water fall flanked on either side by a giant snowmobile and a giant ATV.
The new solar lights, Part 1 of the economic development department’s plans for lighting at the corner, require no electricity
being entirely self-powered via their solar panels and have been purchased and installed thanks to funding from Superior North Community Futures Development Corporation (SNCFDC) and Newmont Mining’s in kind donation of a loader and operator to assist during the installation. Two poles upon which were mounted the lights and solar panels were installed facing the monument. Economic Development Officer Dave Raymond was on site to determine final positioning of both the lights and their solar panels for optimal illumination of the monument; the entire installation was completed in less than two hours. Raymond explained that the lighting project would continue in the spring at which time another vertically mounted solar light would be installed as well as solar step lights bordering the inner circle of the Gateway’s drive-through which encompasses not only the monument but also several pieces of mining equipment and a cultural/historical interpretive walkway for visitors to enjoy. Residents will certainly be quite pleased with this latest upgrade to the Gateway which illustrates its continued progression toward eventual completion.
