Play-doh fun

2215 20_06_2009If I had to single out one activity as Emeraude’s favourite, it would definitely have to be Play-doh. Any opportunity she has to choose an activity whether home, at the family place or at her Dad’s Play-doh is always her first choice.

I must add that it is also a favourite of mine. If you or someone you know has an illness that is physically challenging, acitivites such as this one are a great idea, when seted, I am as able as anyone and don’t have to fret about the kids missing out on things because of me. (Any seated activity is nice when pain management becomes an issue) These days I am having much difficulty with inadequate pain control and so Play-doh offers alot of fun and creativity without adding to my discomfort/pain.

On this day it was super hot out and she had 30 minutes before her Dad was to arrive for their bike ride and rather than play badminton outside with me, she asked to take out her Play-doh. It is fun to watch, she is so creative with it and for her birthday recieved a dozen new colours from her Godparents (my brother & sis-in-law) which has without a doubt  enhanced our Play-doh time.

Here we are using Play-doh that was purchased but I have often made homemade play-doh with my kids. This is a great recipe if you are talking science as well as the product you finish with is quite different in consistency then those you use as ingredients, also a good one for showing that one product (kool-aid) can have many uses.

Here is one of our favourite recipes for homemade play-doh:

Ingredients:
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
2 packages unsweetened Kool-Aid
2 cups boiling water
3 tablespoons vegetable oil

How to make this recipe:
Mix the salt, flour and Kool-Aid packets. (Be sure you are using the small sachets of unsweetened mix.) Use one color per batch (although you can mix your own color and/or add food coloring to intensify the color).

Add the boiling water and oil and stir until blended. Let cool just enough that you are comfortable handling it,  then knead until the dough is of desired consistency.

You can store it for several months in a zippered plastic bag or other airtight container. DO NOT EAT lol

Here is an edible play-doh recipe from Kate Gosselin (Jon & Kate + 8)

Ingredients:
1 cup smooth peanut Butter
1 cup powdered milk
2 tbsp liquid honey

Mix ingredients knead until desired consistency add powdered milk or peanut butter by tablesppons as needed to acheive proper consistency.  PLAY & EAT! (within reason of course and be careful if using play-doh tools, to ensure they are clean if your children will be eating their peanut butter playdoh creations).

HAVE FUN!!!
