The boys were playing around on their skateboards in the driveway the other night and I couldn’t resist getting some photos, they are such great sports, always ready to strike a pose for me or re-take a jump lol. The photo could come in handy when we are able to get to work on getting a skatepark here…

We had hoped to be working on it this spring, unfortunately, there had been a group that had done some fundraising for that about 5 yrs ago and the lady has decided to, well, I’m not sure what it is she is trying to accomplish as it is hard to figure that out speaking to her. They had raised around $4000 (not sure if that was just the dragon boat races or if they had done several fundraisers over the course of the summer the year of the50th reunion) which is awesome. The difficulty comes with her sense of ownership in regards to this money… They had not registered as a not-for-profit or any official group. She had a ‘meeting’ (using the term loosely) that people were not welcome at (she had the door closed when I mentioned that someone from the twp was going to try and stop in, I had invited the person as they could’ve been a huge help if this was for real but it was pretty clear that it wasn’t,{it bothered me more than just a little that she also seemed to

have wanted Lloyd to attend on his own… h eis 14. he doesn’t attend meetings without an adult – he said afterwards that he thought she just wanted him sitting there to be able to say she ‘met with skateboarders’, i can’t say I disagre, she clearly did not want any opinions that didn’t follow her own… It was more of a staging than any kind of meeting and a big waste of our time, especially since I had postponed steroid treatments to attend! I think it may have had more to do with a photo op in the local paper… I remember a few years back there had been some big issue about our local paper’s editor not running a letter or something she had written, don’t think she had paid for something to run I think it was just an article so why he’d be obligated is beyond me but again, I don’t know the details of it just that the editor had written his own piece I had found quite well spoken, about the situation) ANYWAYS, as far as I know she isn’t interested in learning about how to go about getting a committee formed and proceeding in a way that could be successful (like I said, she had 5 yrs since raising the money and wasn’t able to manage anything with it) didn’t want any advisors brought in (EDC, SNCFDC or anyone else) and so I am now just waiting it out until she looses interest again

so that we can get together with some pro-active people, get some advice from those who raise funds and apply for grants for a living, and get a skatepark in Manitouwadge, I had done research last summer looking for companies’ whose mandates include grass roots projects (Like West 49) or ones that have already colaberated to build skateparks in other places and thought this spring we’d be beginning to contact them to see who might be best to team up with, I do not want to be contacting anywhere that this lady and her group already spoke with however, without knowing what

came of it as this could be anoying for the companies. I’ve asked her for that info a few times though and have not received it yet so might have to just start without it… Also, White River (Ontario) has a great skate park that the kids and I have used many times, I think the people who made that happen would obviously have a lot of knoweldge to share and have already been trying to find out who they are. Our kids (in mtwdge) are generaly really awesome, good kids and deserve a cool place to hang out and practice their skills and I’d like to see it happen before Lloyd’s gone to college (defenitely before Emeraude reaches high school lol).
