Family Fun February 18th (sliding & skiing)
Emeraude & I joined Lloyd for night skiing at the Kiwissa Ski Club tonight
for the first time this year and WOW! it was beyond words… We had gone once last year but Emeraude had not enjoyed skiing in the dark as we had gone down the Bunny (our regular run) which was actually off limits due to it’s being on the far right of the hill, out of range of the lights.
Well, things have been changing at our hill and $750,000 later not only does the hill now have snow making and a new-to-them groomer (2008) but the bunny is fully lit thanks to the joint efforts of many (to my knowledge this includes funds or equipment from: the Kiwissa Ski Club, the Township of Manitouwadge, Ed Hedderson {possibly others I may not have the complete list} and technical/electrical/labour from: Dave Jung and Brian Lachance) and after significant snowmaking by those in charge and more snowmaking from the Man upstairs the conditions could not have been more perfect! unless maybe it had been just a little warmer but -18 definetely wasn’t awful and we were well dressed.
Emeraude & I actually got in more runs tonight than any other time (all afternoons) than we have skied this season. She sang for me the whole night, we rode up the T with Lloyd many times (this is always enjoyable as he fills me in on his adventures and his little sister enjoys it feeling like it’s more of a ‘family activity’ that way of which she is fond) I am quite confident that I was able to get some great photos (they’re still uploading so I have yet to actually see them) although my batteries died so there were a few I wanted that I was not able to capture. I still have a big grin on my face just thinking about it all and won’t soon forget even a minute of it. Emeraude says that night skiing is her favourite 🙂
I had hoped to submit a photo tonight possibly for the front page of the Chronicle, however having now taken a quick peek at my photos, none of them are suitable. It probably works out best as the article would have been rushed and Dave Jung has been nice enough to offer me an interview on the weekend; Randy Matteson (Recreation & Tourism director, twp of Mtwdge) said that I could call him tomorrow for the same so I will take the time to do it right hoping for a press/submission date of either this weekend or early next week which also allows me the opportunity to return for night skiing Friday with my tripod in tow as well as possibly Vickie’s telephoto lens (fingers crossed) to get it all done right.
In the meantime, enjoy the photos I was able to get and come back soon for more…
A little earlier we had already been braving the elements,
as I had needed to return to the hospital (Manitouwadge General) for another dilaudid injection {my leg muscles, knees, bones in legs & feet were all very painful especially when standing/walking} and Emeraude & Lloyd came with me as she & I had made organic carrot & raisin cupcakes for the nurses at lunch and had not yet had the opportunity to bring them. Emeraude & Lloyd delivered the cupcakes, and then went to the hills just behind the parking lot to play in the snow as they waited for me.
When I had finished I decided to join them for a while and was happy I did. Lloyd had dug out a shelter for his sister in the side of the hill, from where she could watch him sheltered from the strong blowing winds, which was roomy enough for me too (really should have taken some photos, it’s so neat when he does stuff like that without any suggestion makes me so proud of him). We watched and cheered as Lloyd showed off doing flips of the hill for us and then did some sliding of our own. It was fun but quite cold and it was getting late so we decided to just have supper at the hospital cafeteria. By the time we finished up it was 18:05 (skiing was from 18h to 21h) and we got bundled up again, dropped a few more cupcakes off at a friend’s house (Linda Jetté) and then headed up to Kiwissa.
