Frosty Days.Feb 22.09
I was dissapointed this morning when I looked through the Chronicle Journal
realizing they did not print any photos or the article I sent yesterday. I worked my butt off to make the submission in plenty of time for it to be added to the paper feeling that there had been such planning and effort put into yesterdays Frosty Days events they were definetely worth writing (and reading) about! Perhaps tomorrow they will put it in. If they had replaced it with something more newsworthy from Manitouwadge or Marathon I could have accepted that but there was nothing about our communities at all… well, it’s up to local advertisers to insist on seeing news from our communities.
This link brings you to Speedy Sunday in Manitouwadge, the article I submitted to the Chronicle Journal. After a quick trip to the hospital for some pain meds, I got to KG’s Bar & Lounge for the snowmobile drag race cash prize distribution then raced home to call the Echo. It would’ve only taken about an hour for me to put something together for them about both the MHS Athletic Association’s Box Races and the Manitou Sno Drifter’s Snowmobile Drag Races and thought that should take priority over anything for the Chronicle as this is one of the biggest weekends in Manitouwadge. I was more than a little surprised that there was no one at the Echo, I expected to find them rushing to fit all the weekends events into this week’s paper. This morning I began calling them again at 7:30am, thinking they would certainly be in early not having been there yesterday but again… No luck. I do have to wonder with their recent decision to cut the community billboard because, according to their latest issue, a lack of advertising but if the news is not being covered in a timely fashion, how do they expect local businesses and organizations to race to spend their advertising dollars on the Echo? Last week they used a story from the Canadian Press, something that had already ran for a full day on CFNO many days prior and chose not to put any kind of local spin on it. Could Lauchie Meagher, owner of Black River Logging not be reached, or perhaps any of the many men that have been layed off or relocated to Kapuskasing or Hearst because of the Marathon Pulp Inc. closure????? There, I got my morning gripe out of my system and now back to some GOOD NEWS 🙂 –
here you can check out all the photos from the box races & snowmobile drag races (as well as a more complete list of winners. Enjoy!
Thank you to all the volunteers that made Frosty Days a fun and memorable weekend. Congratulations to Kelly Sagle & the Family Place for a very successful Italian Supper Saturday which completely sold out their 150 tickets the night prior – Wow! good work! The Bean Supper @ KG’s Sunday night (raising funds for Manitouwadge Cancer Assistance Group) seemed to have a good turn out as well, Dominique Gagnon who was the MC for the Sno Drifters prize distribution, upstairs at KG’s, certainly did his part to send people downstairs – two thumbs up!
I do have a little good news… Just received a call from Bunny Scherman, I had called the Echo yesterday offering them an article & photos for both the box races and the snowmobile races but she said that they had people out covering both the events (not sure about that as I was the only person asking for photos and info at the awards for both …???) so anyone interested should be able to pick up an Echo this Wednesday and find the stories and photos about these activities there 🙂 Until then, these can hold you over 🙂
The organizers were very thankful to Dave Jung who created/set up the racing lanes/area. The photos really don’t do it justice, it looked incredibly professional, like something out of the olympics. Great work Dave! (not sure if I’m supposed to let out his secret, but apparently kool-aid was the secret ingredient for his “paint”.
I candunderstand that with their matching costumes (that was awesome) the team which took first place in the Grade 9+ division for most creative was chosen. That being said I think, especially since they were teachers who had a huge part (read:worked very hard to make it happen) in organizing the race it might have been nice to see another team chosen for most creative recognition (there were alot of teams with children in Grade 8 or under that were bumped up to the adult competition because of a parent) in the Grade 9+ division… One of my favourites was the crocodile although many looked like much thought/work had been put in. That, however, is just a personal opinion and I certainly would not let it stop me from encouraging my kids to participate again as it was a wonderful afternoon, very well organized, great sportsmanship on the part of all teams, I could go on but you get the idea. It is the only peice of constructive critism I can come up with.
**Received an email from the Chronicle tonight -mon.11pm- advising that they will be at least putting one of the box race photos in tomorrow (tue.) better than nothing I suppose**
