Painting with Emeraude

I realized it had been a few weeks since Emeraude had painted

and thought this morning’s cold weather and my limited physical energy were great reasons to pull out the paints.  We started out with the acrlic paints, brushes, a toothbrush and a straw… I wanted to show Emeraude that choosing colours is just the tip of the iceberg for painting options.

We watered down some of the paint to make blowing it with the straw a little easier.  We also tried folding some of our paintings to see how they would change and what shapes we could find when unfolding them.  She really enjoyed the toothbrush that we used to ‘spatter’ paint and used it again later when we switched to watercolours. We used stamps as well, trying them first directly in the paint and then using smaller paintbrushes to apply different colours of paint  more precisely… Emeraude liked the results of applying the paint with a brush but preferred directing me in this rather than paint them on herself.  I think she was a little frustrated at not getting the results she expected when she was applying the paint herself.

We did a ton of pages with the acrylics. Emeraude designated quite a few as being for Nonnie Keri’s boys, more specifically ‘the one that wears a white shirt some times’ I can’t say I hadn’t any clue at first who she was referring too not being able to recall which boy had a white shirt when we visited last spring. As she continuted though, from the other things she said and questions she asked that it might be Mikey that these special paintings were intended for.  I know Nonnie will just be tickled pink to see her work.

After the about an hour, Emeraude asked that we get the watercolours out.  These, she says are her favourite. I loved how bold the colours were (watercolours can be very washed out) that she made.  She kept dunking each of her little fingers and then ‘running’ them all over the page, she said that Toopy and Binoo had done this on an episode were they painted.  It was so cute to watch.

I can’t believe how much her techniques have changed since the last time we painted. She really is getting older and her hand/eye coordination is developing immensly.

I am thinking next time we might use some of her giant Strawberry Shortcake colouring pages to paint on as I would like to see how she decides to paint on these. Will she follow the picture trying to paint it in or just see it as a background to cover? Can’t wait to see!  Great work my beautiful artist!
