Chicken in a hole
Karina attemps Chicken in a Hole
Well, I found this recipe online before going to White Lake Provincial Park with Daniel & Emeraude this weekend (June 1st, 2007) and thought it seemed easy enough…
I was pretty happy with how it turned out for a 1st attempt and will defenitely be trying to cook it some time again.
- Dig your hole
the Chicken Sagas continued…
@ about 10pm I Daniel helped me dig up the chicken… I forgot to mention that I had also thrown in some baked potatoes… only 2 of those survived the dig lol.
Also, I pulled the stick out of the ground (the one that was there so I’d dig up the right spot) turned around, tossed it aside and begun digging… Well, I quickly realized I was not digging in the right place (there were fresh roots where I was digging now). So, getting tired in a hurry; I passed the shovel to Daniel and he quickly found the turned up dirt (he guessed right away that I had lost where the stick was when I turned back to start digging) and started digging the right place.
he hit the pot lid I had put atop the chicken and dug the hole lot out for me; it is worth mentioning that hot coals will still be hot and oven mitts are not a bad idea.
Anyhow, I will cut to the chase. 10pm I have to VERY HUNGRY but thankfully VERY PATIENT Charrons as I realize the chicken is not yet cooked! but it is VERY juicy! so I thought it was safe for a little while to leave it unwrapped put back in the rectangle tin but free of the aluminum foil and on the campfire…
30 minutes later…
Charrons still very hungry now I’m getting pretty hungry too lol and chicken still not quite cooked… i’m not as patient as Daniel & Emeraude so I wrap it back in aluminum foil and toss her into the fire
30 minutes later (now pushing 10:45pm)
it’s finally cooked and we sit down to eat our corn, baked potatoes (they’re not hot anymore but still warm enough to be good… although pretty sandy – note to readers the foil baking potatoes are sold in is not sufficient for throwing them in a hole, wrap with additional heavy duty foil to avoid sandy potatoes…
It was DELICIOUS!!! the chicken, incredibly enough, even after being cooked for a half hour unwrapped over a campfire, then another half hour IN THE CAMPFIRE was still INCREDIBLY MOIST!! !!!
So, definetely a project I WILL try again although next time I will start @ or immediately after lunch to allow plenty of prep-time for my fire & hole as I believe this was the problem for my uncooked chicken that their were insufficient coals and the hole was not hot enough when I through the chicken in (when we took it out it was that hot).
SO folks, definetely want to hear about your experiences if any of you attempt your own versions of ‘chicken in a hole’ 🙂
Enjoy!! K. xo
Need the rest of the recipie. How did it taste?
Glad you had a good weekend Karina!
What was the verdict with the chicken….how long did it take to actually cook …and how was it?
I’ll talk to you later!

It was SO moist! and when you read what I did to it after taking out of the hole you won’t believe it!!! I can’t imagine how awesome it would’ve been had I ONLY cooked it IN the hole!
