OVERVIEW of Marathon District Museum’s AVIVA CONTEST Idea:
The Group of Seven is the an internationally known group of Canadian artists from the 1920s. It is made of of Franklin Carmicheal, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald and Frederick Varley. This group often made visits to the North Shore of Superior, creating some great art pieces! Many of the areas these paintings were created have been found! We’d like to showcase the importance of the North Shore of Lake Superior to the Group of Seven and their works.
To do this we will need:
- Trails built to locations used by members of the Group of Seven to create these works that will allow people to visit these spots;
- High-quality reproductions of Group of Seven paintings specific to the North Shore;
- Durable storyboards that explain the Group of Seven’s history on the North Shore
- New display cabinets that will house displays created to record the Group of Seven’s body of work along the North Shore;
- Professionally-made brochures, posters and other advertising materials that can be used to promote the display (on-line and in museums).
- Tours geared to classroom teachers to learn about the Group of Seven.
This will help to make Marathon and the North Shore of Lake Superior a spot to visit while promoting and interpreting a group of artists that are integral to Canadian culture!
