Mother of 2 Among Today’s Graduates At Confederation College’s Marathon Campus
FROM THE EDITOR: I thought this story was a great example of how important post secondary education options are in our Northshore communities AND of how they benefit our communities long-term. CONGRATULATIONS! to Tabatha and all the graduates from Confederation College’s Northwestern Ontario campuses today.
MARATHON, ON – It’s unlikely that Tabatha Broom would have left Marathon. With two young children at home and her fiancé working at the mines, going to Thunder Bay to attend Confederation College wasn’t an option.
“I wouldn’t have been able to go away for school right now because my kids are so young. But having the Northshore Campus right here in Marathon, I could stay in my own hometown – I didn’t have to go anywhere,” she said.
Tabatha graduated today from the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program, pursuing her dream of working in healthcare. In fact, she had an interview with the Wilson Memorial Hospital the day after she finished her placement there, and started work the next week. Now she works mostly with the hospital’s community program, though she does have some shifts right at Wilson Memorial as well.
Although there were other distance education choices, she said that Confederation College by far offered her the best options, and would highly recommend it.
“I really enjoyed it there. The staff were extremely helpful – any questions or concerns that we had, they did their best to resolve them,” Tabatha said. “They were especially helpful finding placements for Tabatha and her classmate within Marathon. Originally, the arrangement was to go to Thunder Bay for work experience. Tabatha said that would have been difficult.”
“The ladies here did what they could for us so that we could just stay in town and not have to travel anywhere. I’m not sure what I would have done otherwise.
