Ontario Government Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers

Ontario recently honoured twelve people and seven organizations with a June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award, for their commitment to volunteerism and longstanding service to their local communities. Among the recognized with the prestigious award were volunteers of the Manitouwadge Cancer Assistance Group.

April 26th, 2013, volunteer members of the Manitouwadge Cancer Assistance Group; Betty Oksanen, Debbie Ray, Anne Williams, Clare Milks, Priscilla Gray and Jackie Jung, were flown to Toronto for a very special luncheon and ceremony at which the Hon. Michael Coteau, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration presented them with the prestigious June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism.

The June Callwood award recognizes dedicated individuals who, like the late June Callwood, demonstrate exceptional leadership, creativity and innovation in their service to their communities and others; as many Manitouwadge residents would attest, the MCAG Volunteers fit this description perfectly.

The Manitouwadge Cancer Assistance Group – Friends Who Care helps cancer patients with illness-related expenses when they have exhausted other options. The group partners with local businesses to organize golf and volleyball tournaments, walks, hockey games, and other events to help cancer patients from remote areas of Manitouwadge receive professional, supportive care.

Nominated by Councilor Connie Hunter, with supporting letters from two families, the “MCAG was honored and humbled to receive the 2013 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism” said MCAG volunteer and June Callwood Award recipient Jackie Jung.

Supporting the not-for-profit sector and promoting Ontario’s tradition of volunteering is part of the new Ontario government’s efforts to build strong communities and a fair society for all.
