Manitouwadge High School’s Top Athletes of 2011-12 Recognized
Thank you to Charrly Killingbeck for providing photography/videography of this event.
MANITOUWADGE, ON – Tuesday, June 12th Manitouwadge High School’s finest athletes were recognized at the annual Athletic Association Awards Banquet in their honour. The athletes with their family and friends, teachers, coaches and dignitaries enjoyed a supper prepared by the Hospitality and Tourism class (CLICK HERE for that story).
The opening address was made by Senior Boys’ Athlete of the Year Kevin Gauthier who reminded his peers and team mates in their senior year that the banquet would be their last together as Manitouwadge High School Wolverines’ encouraging them to take in and enjoy every moment. Recognized as Senior Girls’ Athlete of the Year was Elaine Milks while Manitouwadge High School’s Junior Athletes of the Year for 2011-12 are Liam Aguiar and Cassandra Sullivan. Congratulations to these four outstanding young sports enthusiasts, their love of the game will no doubt serve them well as they continue in their educational pursuits.
Also recognized for outstanding athletic merit at the banquet were the teams who, during the 2011-12 school year, won Northwestern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associations (NWOSSAA) Championships to go on and represent Manitouwadge at the provincial level. Township of Manitouwadge Council, represented by Councillors Connie Hunter, Natalie Labbee and Sheldon Plummer, presented the Wolverines Senior Boys Volleball team, the Senior Badminton team and the Reach for the Top team and their coaches with Certificates of Recognition.
Guest Speaker Bob Kirkpatrick spoke of success, failure and attitude. He emphasied, the importance of failure; providing examples of the many sports stars, familiar to those in attendance, whose regular failure is a necessary part of their carreers and how it is the determination beyond this that makes them successful. However, said Kirkpatrick, it was the last, attitude, that was most important as someone equipped with much talent and a negative attitude would likely do little in life while a not particularly talented individual, equipped with a great work ethic and positive attitude would most certainly have much success.
It was an evening full of memorable moments, many words of wisdom shared and even some disappointment perhaps for those who expected to be recognized that were not. At the end of it all however, more than any of the awards, certificates or titles, it is the friendships forged while playing; relationships that lasted through wins and losses, injuries and mutual hurdles overcome and many, many miles of travelling together, that they may see stand the test of time as, years from now, they look back fondly on their time as Wolverines’ and cherish those they still fondly consider their friends.
CONGRATULATIONS!
