MCAG Overwhelmed by Generosity of Share the Care Walk & BBQ Attendees

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Saturday, May 12th the Manitouwadge Cancer Assistance Group’s Annual Share the Care 5km Walk and BBQ was held under sunny skies and warm temperatures. The event was all the more important this year as it is the main fundraiser for the MCAG this season with their bi-annual Connie Williams Golf Tournament having been cancelled [CLICK HERE for that story].

Manitouwadge residents did not dissapoint, it is estimated approximately135 people participated, making donations and handing in pledges. The MCAG had made a point this year, of reminding people that pledge sheets or early collections are not mandatory, and many of those participating told the ladies’ that they (the participants) preferred being able to simply make their own donation and participate.

The MCAG was thrilled to once again have the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department, led by Chief Owen Cranney, cooking up a storm on the BBQ. MCAG Vice-President Jackie Jung R.N. thanked the Firefighters as well as volunteers who helped with set-up and take down of the tent, tables and other materials at the event as well as everyone who participated for their efforts and generosity “We couldn’t do it without the support we receive from the community” said Jung adding that “It was heart-warming to see all those people from our community walking for such a great cause. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day or a better example of community spirit!”

A total of $3344.96 was raised to help those touched by cancer in Manitouwadge. This total included an incredible donation of $1683.25 from the Our Lady of Lourdes School Grade 4/5 class, taught by Mme. Lise Foucault-Clark (CLICK HERE to see photos/video interview with the Grade 4/5 class) . As promised, the children came out to fulfill their walking commitment to those who had pledged them, and walked the full 5km – a very impressive distance for children 9-11 years of age to complete. Their teacher, Mme. Foucault-Clark, attended as well, also walking the 5km, proud to see her students following through on their project “They [Grade 4/5 students] were all so committed to raising as much money as possible” said Foucault-Clark explaining that the students originally had a goal of raising at least $20 each [$300 for the group], an amount they quickly surpassed raising more than 5 times their original goal. “They really worked hard and collected each and every donation themselves, going door-to-door to friends and family, but the response they received from the community was equally touching, not a single person turned them away, everyone they visited gave something” said Foucault-Clark.

The MCAG also thanked the Manitouwadge Family Health Team for their part in promoting the walk which was included as one of the current 2-week segment’s ‘Pit Stops’. At least 86 Amazing Walk participants were among those who completed the 5km challenge to have their passports signed and stamped. The MFHT’s Amazing Walk teams were not the only ones to attend as a group, local fitness buffs, the “Boot Camp Ladies”, also walked together. Finally, the MCAG wanted to recognize the support of those who participate year after year, people like young Mike Dubois who, the MCAG reports, loyally collects pledges every year.

CONGRATULATIONS!

to the Manitouwadge Cancer Assitance Group on the success of the 2012 Share the Care Walk and BBQ and the whopping total of more than $3300 raised and to all those who volunteered and participated to make it happen. These funds will allow the MCAG to provide assistance to local people touched by cancer.
