Busy Day for Manitouwadge Fire Department at Airport
MANITOUWADGE, ON – Yesterday, was a busy day for the Manitouwadge Fire Department; OntarioNewsNorth.com Editor, Karina Hunter spoke with Fire Chief Owen Cranney about all that had transpired .
Monday, September 12th the Fire Department and Ontario Provincial Police attended a small brush fire at the turn off for the Manitouwadge Airport on Highway 614 which was subsequently extinguished. The fire was started when a tree fell onto a power line causing sparks to fly and ignite. Power to the airport was consequently knocked out for several hours.
Big news at the airport on Monday however was not the fire but that repairs to damage at the airport, and the weather station located, there has officially been repaired. A major storm June 8th (Click for related article/photos), which included gale force winds of 97km/hr, causing damage to properties throughout Manitouwadge; roofs with shingles torn off, large trees blown over in some cases onto roofs and into homes causing significant damage, the wind sock at the airport which was grounded and secured by a cement base was snapped, computer systems of the weather station and other components were also among the damage. Fire Chief Cranney explained that most repairs were done in-house aside from the computer system which had to be sent away which saved both time and money.
