Our Lady of Lourdes School Celebrates Shrove Tuesday
MANITOUWADGE, ON- Earlier this week, students and staff of Our Lady of Lourdes School celebrated Shrove Tuesday (March 8th), with a special lunch.
Shrove Tuesday, also known as “Pancake Tuesday”, “Fat Tuesday” or “Mardi Gras” is a Catholic holiday, the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of the season of fasting and prayer called Lent. Students and staff were treated to a delicious pancake and sausage lunch, prepared by volunteers.
Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent during which people would abstain from many of these, fasting from meat, dairy, or eggs.. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure.
The following morning, students and staff regrouped in their school families and attended the Ash Wednesday mass at the church, officially begin the season of lent in preparation for Easter.
