TRICK OR EAT
TRICK OR EAT in Marathon & Manitouwadge! Taking a BITE out of Hunger Campaign!
Trick or Eat® is North America’s largest food drive fuelled entirely by youth. Thanks to volunteers, over 750,000 pounds of food is collected for over 100 local organizations that work tirelessly to ensure that no one goes hungry. Marathon resident Karen Richard was inspired by the initiative when she learned of it during a visit to her daughter’s post-secondary instute in Southern Ontario and decided she would spearhead a similar food drive in Marathon. With help from Barrick Gold and a great deal from Marathon’s Embroidery and Signs, Richard is equipped with 400 neon green bags for October 31st Trick or Eat volunteers and another 100 she has shared with Manitouwadge Trick or Eat organizer Natalie Labbee who is planning her community’s food drive for the week prior, October 24th.
This year there are 102 communities, up from 60 in 2009, participating in Trick or Eat though this number may be much higher when including communities like Marathon and Manitouwadge which are not officially registered, the annual event is well to becoming a regular part of the Hallowe’en season. It’s a fun way for young people to get involved in an issue that is sometimes ignored in today’s go-go world of Twitter and texting, helping kids and parents come together, and become more socially aware that there are people struggling in their communities. I hope alot of people come out and participate” said MacDonald.
