Manitouwadge Turns Off its Screens

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Turn off the Screen Week 2010 began yesterday evening with the Manitouwadge Public Library’s Book Detectives Challenge and Manitouwadge High School’s Lob Ball Game of teachers and parents vs. students.

Participants at the library picked up clue sheets which they will use to guess what book titles are thanks to the help of images representing these titles.  So many eager detectives attended the library to collect their sheets that library staff was left scrambling to make additional copies.  Clue Sheets will be handed in throughout the week with prizes available to be won.

MHS Principal Brian Johnson

Meanwhile, behind the Recreation Centre at the ball field, a crowd began to accumulate in the bleachers as students from not only MHS but also OLOL and MPS, came out to face off against the adults. MHS Principal Brian Johnson assumed the role of backcatcher, allowing him to coordinate player positions which he did in such a way to allow for each player to have a chance at bat and at each offensive position on the field including pitcher which for some presented quite a challenge!

Parents who had originally attended with no intentions of playing slowly joined the field, unable to resist the joining the fun.

Turn Off the Screens Week organizer Public Health Nurse Jackie Jung, RN attended each of the events to lend her support and assistnce as needed as she will continue to do throughout the week.

Turn Off the Screens Week is  an annual event, sponsored by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and many community partners (including OntarioNewsNorth.com), which has been grown by Jung, over the years, to become a community event unparralled by any other in Manitouwadge.  TBDHU sponsors similar events in neighbouring communities, including Thunder Bay though Manitouwadge residents should feel quite priviledged as theirs is the only TOTS week on the Northshore to include events for a full 7 days! For your copy of the schedule of events, click on either TOTS Week ad appearing on OntarioNewsNorth.com (the horizontal banner above or daily schedule block in the centre of the home

What’s next? On the agenda tonight, Tuesday, June 8th, is the FUN RUN FOR HEART which will begin at the Rec Centre at 6 o’clock.  Participants are strongly encouraged to continue on to the Municipal Council Chambers after their FUN RUN for the Manitou Sno-Drifters Annual General Meeting.

MORE PHOTOS WILL BE POSTED IN 2HRS. Thank you for your patience.
